What's the Solution?
In response to the situation with water scarcity, scientists have come up with a variety of solutions. Some of them include:
- Rainwater harvesting systems. These are systems that collect water during rainstorms. 33,000 rainwater harvesting systems are being used in Mexico.
- Delivery. In some places in, people are being delivered water weekly. However, this makes the people in those places dependent on that weekly shipment.
- Protection. Certain organizations are working to protect wetlands, making sure that there will still be water in the future.
- Restoration. Wells are being drilled into the ground in places that don't have water. This provides a new way for the people there to get water.
- Treatment. There are water treatment devices that can clean corrosive water, allowing people to use it again.
- Water kit. A water kit provided to people contains all the tools a family needs during an emergency situation. One kit can help five families, or 25 people, make it through an emergency for one month.
- HELIO. HELIO is a solar powered device that is low maintenance and distillates dirty water to make it drinkable. This is also good at preventing climate change as it is solar powered.
- Water reservoirs. These reservoirs are open-air storage area where water is collected and kept in large quantity for future use.
- Local water filters. Water filters are being placed in Uganda that are for public use. People bring dirty water and the filter will clean it out, allowing them to have clean drinking water.
- Surface water. Water is diverted from surface water areas such as lakes and rivers which is brought to people from aqueducts and canals.
